I don't serve a lot of new foods at once because it can be overwhelming. It works better if I introduce only one at a meal and I ask my son to try that first so he is not full by the time he gets to it. If he likes it, he can serve himself as much as he wants from the bowl. He's little, so dishing out his own food seems like a treat.

We've never talked that much about this food being a bad food or that food being a good one. It's more about what you can eat only a little of and what's OK to eat more of. So fruits and vegetables are anytime foods and cookies and cakes are just for once in a while.

I have my kids take one "thank you" bite of new things. I tell them, "You don't have to finish the whole thing, but I took the time to cook this, and I just want you to take one bite as a thank you because I took the time to make it."

I try to cook well-rounded meals and we rarely eat fast food. I don't keep soda or junk food in the house either, but nothing is off limits. I just try to teach them to eat some things in moderation.
